I wasn’t in the mood to make dinner, but I had no choice so I went for the easiest, quickest option I could make. A fast and delicious Chicken Jalfrezi recipe that comes together in no time. I scanned my refrigerator for options and realised I had everything I needed for a simple homemade Chicken Jalfrezi. That’s how I saved myself from spending too long in the kitchen, yet still served a flavour-packed dinner with enough leftovers for the next day. A total win-win!
Let’s see how I made it:
About Chicken Jalfrezi: Chicken jalfrezi is a spicy, stir-fried curry dish made with chicken, onions, and bell peppers in a thick, tomato-based sauce. The name “jalfrezi” comes from the Bengali words “jhal” (spicy) and “frezi” (stir-fry), indicating its hot and “hot fry” origins. It is popular in British and South Asian cuisines, often served with rice or naan bread.

Add in tomato puree, ketchup and srirach chili sauce and give it a mix.
Add in all the seasonings (salt, pepper, cumin, coriander, turmeric) and mix.
Lastly, add all the chopped veggies and cook them just enough to stay crisp and vibrant—avoid letting them get too soft.
Easy Chicken Jalfrezi is ready. Serve warm with boiled rice and enjoy.
Here’s a quick video to help you understand it a bit more and see how I make it:
MY TWO CENTS:
- Adjust the spices to suit your taste buds.
- Don’t cover the chicken while frying or it’ll get chewy.
- Don’t overcook the veggies, they’re meant to be crisp and not cooked completely.
- You can use any hot sauce instead of sriracha sauce.
- You can totally make puree at home too, just boil 3-4 tomatoes with 3-4 garlic cloves and blend.
Hope you’ll enjoy trying it out.
